IMPORTANCE OF BREAKFAST

Abimbola Omole

Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper, it is a well known saying but how well do we follow it. During a busy morning, it is easy to let breakfast fall in the least of priorities, but taking just a few minutes to have something to eat can really make a difference to your day.
As long as you eat it within the first couple of hours of your day, you will still be getting the benefits of breakfast. Skipping breakfast is not always intentional though. Yeah I get it. One just has to manage time well and avoid time wasting stuff, sadly having breakfast is one of them. How sad.
Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel for the day after an overnight fast {that’s where its name originates from}, without breakfast you are definitely running on an empty engine, which may be dangerous if care is not taken.
Here are some important tips I would like to share.

  •     Incorporate Whole Grain Foods, which includes whole meal bread, oats, and whole grain cereals.
  •      Combine Carbohydrates with Protein, protein sources such as milk, egg, fish, akara, moinmoin.
  •     Stay Hydrated, include a drink in your breakfast, start your day with a glass of water, fruit juice or    herbal tea
  •        Fruits and vegetables are also important in having a healthy breakfast, chopped apple or banana with your cereal or porridge is a good way to include some fruits.

It is also important to instill a healthy breakfast habit with your children from a young age. Children can enjoy bread, cereals, milk which are all important elements of a healthy balanced diet. It might also be an excellent occasion to eat together as a family when possible, this helps in reducing the prevalence of breakfast skipping and developing good eating habits which may last a lifetime.
