I hope we accomplished all we set out to do last year, if not brace up for this new year and believe anything is possible!
Eating well is very important
to one's mental and emotional health, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on food. Especially
now that our economy is facing recession, you tend to eat less quality meals,
which affect the quality of our living.
You should know that eating
well on the cheap is not all about the cost of food. It is all about limiting
unnecessary spending revise shopping habits and focus on healthier
choices.
MAKE SMART CHOICES
Cut the junk. Eliminate
unhealthy, processed and packaged foods.
As much as possible start to cook your own meals. It will save you more money.
Your wallet and body will thank you.
EAT OUT LESS
Eating at a fast food
restaurant is very expensive than eating at the comfort of your own house. Preparing
a healthy simple meal will cost far less and leave you with some left overs you
can modify for your next meal. You can go creative with your soups, stews or
stir-fries to create unique flavours.
Get your kids or partners involved in the cooking process, it is a great
opportunity to teach them about different foods and balancing a budget. Even if
you live alone, there are plenty of ways to cook cheap and healthy meals at
home. Preparing large portions of food to use over multiple meals saves time and
energy. You can decide to cook once and eat multiple times. Cook a large meal
at the beginning of the week so that you have extra to use later in the week
when you don't feel like cooking. Also, try to experiment with combinations:
you may be surprised how many foods with different flavors go well together.
For example, try making a large green salad and adding cooked whole grains and
veggies on top.
STICK TO YOUR SHOPPING LIST
Sticking to one's shopping
list requires hard core discipline, the more prepared you are, the less impulse
purchases you’ll
make. Shop within the perimeter of your budget. Purchase the healthiest food
possible and priority should be given to healthy whole foods, fresh produce,
therefore leaving less room for junks that tend to cost more. If you don't
trust yourself, shop with others. you
can decide to involve the kids or your partner or maybe you decide to invite
your friend to share shopping responsibilities together. It can be a fun way of
catching up on old times!
BUY IN BULK
It is highly advisable you
buy your food produce in bulk. It will save you more money, time and
unnecessary stress of visiting the market
often. Also, you can also beat the fluctuating high price. Educate
yourself on other venues and discount stores where they offer great bargain
prices. To avoid waste, freeze large portions of perishables in smaller and
manageable sizes. While you can store up your grains in airtight containers.
SUPERB FOOD PRESENTATION
Presentation makes a huge
difference in the appeal of a meal. Make meals look inviting and appealing.
Eating on a budget can still be elegant, romantic, fun, and of course tasty.
You can decide to spice up the table with some veggies, stir fries etc. Use
carrots, red peppers, tomatoes to brighten up your meals. Place some fresh
flowers in the center of the table. Decorate it in your own simple ways.
BE THANKFUL
Even in this recession
period, we still have food on our tables, Godwin. Generally, times are hard and
making mealtimes a social experience should be one way to relive stress. The simple act of talking to a friend or
loved over the dinner table can play a big role in relieving stress and
boosting mood. Gather the family together and stay up to date on everyone’s daily lives. If you live alone, invite a friend,
co-worker, or neighbour over, it definitely a way of attracting God's
blessings. Who knows?
